Boulder Public Library at the Flatirons.

Summer, 2010.
The architecture of the Boulder Public Library mirrors, accents, supports the magnificence of the iconic Flatirons.

Living at the edge of the Great American Prairie and the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, the city of Boulder has a long history of commitment to responsible development.

This history extends as far back as 1907, when business leaders organized to fund a consultation from the most noted landscape architecture firm in the nation. Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr, whose father designed the grounds of the US Capitol in Washington, DC, and Central Park in New York City, was commissioned to provide professional guidance for the City of Boulder.

His report created the blueprint that has been followed in the century since that visit, and continues to form the inspiration for planning into the 21st century.

One would be hard pressed to find a better example of human effort working to live in harmony with the beauty of God's creation. The formal office in the City of Boulder organization charged with maintaining this long tradition is called, appropriately enough, Community Planning + Sustainability. Within that office, charged with actual implementation of policy in the built environment, is the Planning & Development Services Department.
We partner with our community to create a truly great and sustainable city, worthy of its setting.
