"My father had the greatest way of listening to my reactions and my opinions," Douglas said to me a few days ago.

"Especially if he had different ideas than I had about what we were talking about. He wouldn't argue with me or tell me I was wrong or try to explain where my thinking had gone astray."

I listened.

"He'd just say, 'Is that as far as your thinking has taken you so far?' "
